What is going on in Seattle?

Seattle Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos 43-8 to win their first ever Super Bowl on February 2, 2014. The Seahawks are among the youngest teams to ever win the Super Bowl.  Malcolm Smith earned MVP honors with two great players against the Broncos best-ever NFL offense. Russell Wilson is the third youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl and just fourth to win in his second season.

The Seahawks victory parade is scheduled from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m at downtown Seattle. You can view more pictures via #12parade. Shoreline Community College is celebrating the great victory at the flagpole outside the 1000 Building to raise the 12th (wo)man flag and our voices at 12:12 p.m on February, 5th.

Join us for Lunar New Year Celebration!

On January 30, 2014, the International Education department teamed up with the Confucius Institute of Washington State to offer a traditional Chinese Spring Festival celebration on campus. Over 480 students, faculty and staff attended the Chinese Lunar New Year celebration.  Participants learned how to make Chinese dumplings and paper-cuts and also write Chinese calligraphy.

This event was made possible by a grant the College received from the Confucius Institute of Washington to promote Chinese language and culture on campus and in the community.

“We are thankful for these kinds of opportunities to promote cultural awareness and global understanding,” said Diana Sampson, Executive Director of International Education.  According to Spring Festival tradition, 2014 is the year of horse. People who are born in the year of horse are often described as friendly, positive, sophisticated, bright, cheerful, popular and fun loving. We wish everyone a Happy Lunar New Year, prosperity and success in the Year of the Horse.

Winter ISOP 2014!

We have the 2014 Winter International Student Orientation Program (ISOP) this entire week. Over 100 students and parents from different countries and continents come to our campus to embark their new journey in the US.
For many of them, this is their first time in the US. They are nervous about the new environment, but excited for the challenges. They are anxious about the unknowns, but anticipating the opportunities. Please see the pictures and share our students’ excitement.
Shoreline President Daryl Campbell gave the welcoming remarks. This is probably the first “seminar” for our students. What we have learned? Raise hands, participate and engage! We have started our journey here at Shoreline.

The IPM (International Student Mentors) organized a Shoreline Community College team for the 2013 Jingle Bell Run/Walk, a fundraiser for Arthritis. The 23 member Shoreline Community College team ran/walked 5K (3 mile) with 1,022 people on the morning of December 8th in downtown Seattle. Both Shoreline Community College students and staff members had a great time staying warm and taking part in this community event. This is an annual tradition for the IPMs, so we look forward to walking with you at the next Jingle Bell Run/Walk.
