Free Concerts at Seattle Center

Come get a taste of Seattle’s independent music scene at Seattle Center! Every Friday during August, KEXP 90.3FM and Seattle Center sponsor free concerts.  They take place on the Mural Amphitheatre Lawn starting at 5:30 pm.

These concerts are completely free and welcome all ages. Seating is limited, so you want to get there a little early. You can bring your own picnic food or head to the Armory and buy a delicious dinner to enjoy while you watch.

Meet Your IPMs: Duy and Freeman!

The International Peer Mentors for the 2017-2018 school year are excited to begin working with all of our wonderful students. Learn a little more about two of the eight new IPMs below!

Duy Nguyen (Vietnam)

Dream Job: Hotel Manager or Event Planner

Shoreline CC Clubs/Activities: Just Dance Club

Why he became an IPM: I want to improve my communication skills as well as help the students out, especially the new ones. Moreover, I want to see this world with different paradigms since our school has students who are from more than 50 countries. I believe that looking at the world with a broader lens will help me become a better person.

What he likes best about studying here: A lot of clubs with a lot of activities is the best thing that I like about studying at Shoreline. In addition, the faculty, staff, and instructors do their job professionally and they are very friendly.

Xiao “Freeman” Zhang (China)

Favorite Foods: Beijing roast duck and poké bowls

Shoreline CC Clubs/Activities: Chinese Culture Club and two times orientation volunteer

Why he became an IPM: I really want to help international students in the orientation and other times of each quarter, just like when they helped me when I first came here. Also, I especially enjoy helping others and I hope I can assist other students as much as I can. Becoming an IPM can also improve my communication and teamwork skills while working with my team, which is made up of other international students from different countries.

Advice for students to be successful and happy: My advice is not only focus on your studies, but also participate in different exciting school events and social events which can help you make many friends. Also, the experience of social activities can help you transfer to your dream university more easily.

Come talk to Freeman if you like sports (especially the New York Knicks), or want to ask for help in your life of studying at Shoreline!

Hady Flore Mafeugang Kougang (Cameroon)

Major: Nursing

Dream Job: Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, because I love the cute little tiny human and really enjoy seeing them go from a premature state to fully functioning babies.

Why she became an IPM: I became an IPM to help students while sharing and learning new cultural backgrounds. I believe that diversity is what makes the world beautiful and interesting, and understanding this makes the Earth a better place to live.

Why she chose Shoreline: Shoreline is the only community college with a university’s standards and facilities. Teachers, whose teaching techniques are effective, are also great and available. Furthermore, Shoreline is well equipped with facilities that ease student life, especially international students.

Come talk to Hady if you need a friend!! And if you love health related movies or shows. She would love to learn about your country, what makes your origin unique, and to learn your language!

Nannapas “Ploy” Muenprasitivej (Thailand)

Favorite Foods: Pad Thai, papaya salad, curries, and noodles

Why she became an IPM: I would like to help other international students when they need help and also be able to work with many people from different countries. Since we only live once, I want to explore and gain more experiences about working with other people. Not only is it helping me prepare for the working life, but also will let me know my strengths and weaknesses.

Advice for students to be happy and successful at Shoreline: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s normal to make mistakes because it is what everybody has done. We can learn from it.

Come talk to Ploy if you love to do active activities (such as bungee jumping), or want to do a study group for chemistry or biology!

Seafair Torchlight Parade

One of the main events of Seattle Seafair is the Torchlight Parade! The Torchlight Parade is an evening event where more than 100 parade units march, illuminating a path through downtown Seattle. This year’s parade is Saturday, July 29, starting at 7:30pm.

The parade route is along 4th Avenue, and most of the seating is free. There are some reserved seating areas, which people can purchase tickets for on the Torchlight Parade website.

Before the parade starts, there is a Torchlight Fanfest at Seattle Center. There you can get a sneak peek at some of the floats, look around exhibitor’s booths, and get something to eat from the food stalls.

Meet Your IPMs: Nicholas and Farrell!

Man Ho “Nicholas” Chu (Hong Kong)

Favorite Food: Curry is my favorite and I tried to eat it for a whole week…

Shoreline CC Clubs/activities: Deputy Secretary of Vocal Association, President of Hong Kong Student Association, and writing tutor.

Why he became an IPM: When I first came to Shoreline, I got help from the previous IPMs. I know when international students come here, they would feel helpless. I want to help them with my experiences.

Why he chose Shoreline: When I was in Hong Kong, I met the advisors. They gave me useful suggestions and helped me plan my academic career when we first met. I felt like Shoreline really cares about students.

Advice for students to be happy and successful at Shoreline: Be more active in school!!! Being more active can help you make more friends and gain wonderful school experience. Friends can help you no matter your personal problems or academic problems.

Farrell Fileas (Indonesia)

How he spends his free time: Aside from socializing or eating, I generally engage myself in musical activities. I can play the piano and guitar, so I switch between those two instruments. I also spend quite some time in church, and yes – I do play those instruments on most Sunday Services!

Why he became an IPM: I believe every student in Shoreline should be warmly welcomed. I can closely relate to the mixed feeling of joy and sadness experienced by students who came from abroad to the United States to study. I’m always looking to improve myself and to assist you in your times of need. I’m here to provide support for all of you, so don’t hesitate to approach me for questions, or just for chit-chat!

Advice for students to be happy and successful at Shoreline: Keep an open mind toward the beliefs and opinions of others. You will be integrated to the international community more than ever in your life, so don’t waste the opportunity! It’s also never a bad idea to maintain a good GPA.

Learn About Sustainable Living at NW Solar Fest!

The Shoreline Solar Project is hosting the Northwest Solar Fest on Saturday, August 22nd! The event will be held at Shoreline Community College from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

NW Solar Fest is a sustainable living fair. That means it’s all about how people can change their habits in order to preserve the environment. There will be innovations like solar power for homes, electric vehicles, and tiny houses. There will also be “Conversation Cafés” with live demonstrations and panels.

NW Solar Fest is free to visit and has free parking around campus. There will also be cultural performances, food stalls, and local business and non-profit booths. Come enjoy your Saturday learning about sustainable living and renewable energy!

Hikari Akasaki (Japan)

Favorite Food: Vegan pizza

Why she became an IPM: I thought IPM would be a great opportunity for me to make new friends, learn new things, and gain a new experience.

What she likes best about studying and living here: I like the professors and staff at Shoreline, they are very nice and helpful. Also, it is easy to get vegan food around the area.

Advice for students to be happy and successful at Shoreline: I think the key to being successful at Shoreline is to meet new people and have an open mind.

Come talk to Hikari if you know a good vegan restaurant! One of her favorites is Wayward Vegan Café in the University District.

Aliya Aliyeva (Kazakhstan)

Dream Job: Working at the Nazarbayev University Medical Center

Shoreline CC Clubs: Adventure Builder Club, Just Dance Club, Art Club, and Vice President of the Shoreline Community College Vocal Association.

Why she became an IPM: From my first International Student Orientation it was my goal to become an IPM because I like to meet new people, especially from different countries. Besides that, I know how sometimes it can be lonely when you are the only student from your country, so I want to make Shoreline even more welcoming and interesting. Feel free to talk to me any time you want!

Advice for students to be happy and successful at Shoreline: Do not be afraid of making new friends (both international and domestic)! They will not bite you!

Seafair Seattle Pow-Wow

The United Indians of All Tribes Foundation is hosing their 30th annual Seafair Pow Wow this weekend, July 14-16! A Pow Wow is a Native American gathering of singing, dancing, and celebration. It’s a must-see for anyone who wants to learn about the culture and history of Washington State.

All people are welcome to the Pow Wow. Come take lots of pictures, learn about Native American and Indigenous traditions and cultures, eat delicious food, and even participate in their Intertribal dance! For more information, check out their website.

Shoreline Offers Affordable Education

Shakespeare in the Park 2017

GreenStage is Seattle’s longest-running Shakespeare Company. It’s their mission to have as many people as possible engage in live theater. This is their 20th season of free Shakespeare in the park and will be performing two full length plays.

Richard II is the story of King Richard II’s last two years in power on the throne of England. This is the first of Shakespeare’s historical plays about King Richard II’s bloodline, and covers the last two years of his life. Click here for more information and for the full schedule.

The Comedy of Errors is a story of two sets of twins separated at birth. The twins run into each other in one city and the trouble begins! Due to cases of mistaken identities, their lives become full of romantic, legal, and outrageous mishaps. Click here for more information and for the full schedule.

GreenStage also has their Backyard Bard program, where four actors put on two hour-long plays. This year, they will be doing A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet. Click here for their performance schedule.

The Seattle Shakespeare Company also hosts free outdoor plays under the program Wooden O. They perform in nearby locations like Richmond Beach Park, Edmonds City Park, and Volunteer Park. They also have two plays for this summer.

Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare’s romantic comedies. The main characters, Beatrice and Benedick, try to outwit each other as their friends set up a plan for them to fall in love. Click here for more information and for the full schedule.

Pericles is a high seas adventure about Pericles, Prince of Tyre. He learns shocking information about King Antioch and he flees for his life.
